Sabres sign Buffalo native Trevor Kuntar to contract

Kuntar had been playing on an AHL contract in Rochester

Buffalo, N.Y. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - The Buffalo Sabres have signed Rochester Americans forward Trevor Kuntar to a NHL contract on Wednesday. The contract is a one-year deal worth $775,000.

The Buffalo native has played 24 games with the Amerks this season, scoring nine goals and four assists for 13 points.

After playing three years at Boston College, Kuntar spent two seasons with the Providence Bruins in the American Hockey League. The Boston Bruins had drafted the 24-year-old in the third round of the 2020 NHL Draft.

In 148 career AHL games, Kuntar has 22 goals and 23 assists for 45 points. He’s also had 232 minutes in penalties, which tells you he’s a physical player.

The center played for the Buffalo Jr. Sabres growing up.

His dad, Les Kuntar, played six games in goal for the Montreal Canadiens during the 1993-94 season, going 2-2-0 with a 3.18 goals-against average and an .877 save percentage.

He also played 21 games for the Amerks in the 1996-97 season, going 6-9-3 with a 3.42 goals-against average and an .889 save percentage.

There's still no news on if center Josh Norris is going to be ready to play Thursday in Vancouver against the Canucks. Norris took part in warm ups Tuesday in Edmonton, but felt ill and tweaked a muscle, resulting in him being pulled from the lineup against the Oilers.

If he can’t go, Kuntar could get his first NHL game.
