SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Byrnes suffered its first loss of the regular season Saturday, falling 79–70 to Independence at Spartanburg High School. The loss drops the Runnin’ Rebels to 3–1 on the year.

Byrnes led 61–54 at the end of the third quarter before Independence surged ahead with a decisive fourth-period run. Independence outscored the Rebels 25–9 in the final eight minutes to flip the game and secure the victory.

The Runnin’ Rebels entered the matchup unbeaten and appeared in control late before the collapse in the fourth period. The loss marks the first major setback of the early season for a team that opened the schedule with three straight wins.

Byrnes will look to bounce back at home Tuesday when it hosts JL Mann.
