Cowley: Boylen's Days With Bulls Appear Numbered

(670 The Score) Bulls coach Jim Boylen's days with the organization appear to numbered, according to what Sun-Times writer Joe Cowley has reported and had to say.

On the Dan Bernstein Show on Tuesday morning, Cowley explained that all signs point to the Bulls' new leadership tandem of executive vice president of basketball operations Arturas Karnisovas and general manager Marc Eversley dismissing Boylen once the NBA determines the status of its currently suspended season.

"From what I'm hearing, the decision is going to be they're moving on from Jim Boylen and the coaching staff," Cowley said.

"I think it's not if. I think it's how going about it. How can we do the exit strategy of this?"

Beyond his 39-84 record in leading the Bulls across parts of two seasons, Boylen is hurt by another key factor, Cowley said. The new regime has emphasized that it wants to have a player's-first mentality, and Boylen has clashed publicly with players in the past -- most notably star guard Zach LaVine.

In recent Zoom meetings with new management, several Bulls players expressed their desire for a new coach, as Cowley reported last Friday.

"Some key members gave the thumbs down on Jim and the current coaching staff," Cowley told Bernstein. "They would like different voices above them.

"That doesn't bode well for Jim."

Boylen has maintained optimism that he'll return next season, according to reports. Cowley explained that's because Boylen has had the support of Bulls ownership -- but the catch is chief operating officer Michael Reinsdorf has made clear that Karnisovas has full control and that he won't influence Karnisovas on basketball decisions.

"Jim feels like he's trusting the word of what he was told before all of this and throughout all of this that he will be coaching next season," Cowley said. "So you have a guy that's hanging on to that. The powerful people up top have told him, 'We would like you back, but it's not our decision.' He's hoping that he can twist that, talk to guys, present his side of the argument and come back next season."
