(670 The Score) The Cubs have recalled right-hander Adbert Alzolay from their alternate camp in South Bend and optioned right-hander Colin Rea there, they announced amid a series of minor roster moves Thursday.
Alzolay will start when the Cubs host the Reds on Thursday evening. Alzolay has pitched well for the Cubs, posting a 2.08 ERA across 8 2/3 innings in three appearances. Rea has a 5.79 ERA in nine appearances for the Cubs this season.
The Cubs made a handful of other roster transactions as well. Outfielder Steven Souza Jr. cleared waivers and was granted his release after recently being designated for assignment. Left-hander Matt Dermody cleared waivers and was assigned outright to South Bend. Right-hander Joe Wieland was added to the 60-man player pool and also assigned to South Bend.
Right-hander Juan Gamez and outfielder Ryan LaMarre were granted their release. Chicago also traded minor league infielder Pedro Martinez to Tampa Bay as the player to be named later to complete its acquisition of designated hitter/outfielder Jose Martinez on Aug. 30.
