Cubs Make Series Of Roster Moves After Being Active At Trade Deadline

Outfielder Albert Almora. Jr was officially optioned to South Bend.

(670 The Score) The Cubs made a series of roster moves Tuesday, a day after they were plenty active just ahead of the MLB trade deadline.

The Cubs activated third baseman Kris Bryant and outfielder Steven Souza Jr. from the injured list while also adding designated hitter/first baseman/outfielder Jose Martinez, outfielder Cameron Maybin and lefty reliever Josh Osich to the roster. The Cubs acquired Martinez from the Rays on Sunday, Maybin from the Tigers on Monday and Osich from the Red Sox on Monday.

Bryant, Souza, Martinez, Maybin and Osich will all be available for Chicago when it plays at Pittsburgh on Tuesday evening.

In corresponding moves to create space on the active roster, the Cubs optioned outfielder Albert Almora Jr. to its alternate camp at South Bend, place right-hander Tyler Chatwood on the 10-day injured list with a right forearm strain and designated reliever Casey Sadler for assignment.

Bryant returns after missing two weeks with a finger injury, while Souza had suffered from a hamstring injury. The Cubs will look for Martinez to provide a spark against left-handed pitching, while Maybin will provide outfield depth.

"He'll play when we find the right matchup," manager David Ross said of Maybin on the Laurence Holmes Show.

The Cubs also acquired lefty reliever Andrew Chafin from the Diamondbacks on Monday, but he hasn't joined the active roster yet due to a finger injury.

Almora was sent to South Bend after hitting .167 in 28 games this season. His demotion has led to questions about his tenure with the Cubs' big league team being over as the team looks to the future. Sadler had a 5.79 ERA in 10 appearances for the Cubs this season.
