(670 The Score) The Cubs shared bad news Wednesday, as they revealed that right-hander Marcus Stroman has been diagnosed with a right rib cartilage fracture.
There's no timetable for Stroman's return, and it's unclear if he'll get back to action this season. Stroman's injury also clouds his future plans, as he holds a $21-million player option for the 2024 season. When Stroman was pitching like an ace in the first half of the season, it seemed to be a foregone conclusion that he would decline his option and sign a lucrative multi-year contract in free agency. After his poor recent performance and as he carries an injury risk, the dynamic has changed for the 32-year-old Stroman, who has a 3.85 ERA and 1.24 WHIP in 23 starts in 2023.
So what will happen? Has Stroman already pitched his last game for the Cubs? Or will he exercise his option to come back in 2024? The Mully & Haugh crew debated that Thursday morning.
"I believe Marcus Stroman will be back next year," executive producer Dustin Rhoades said. "I think he'll opt in because that will be his best option. Nobody is going to pay him $100 million on an extended contract."
"It's good news if he's back."
Host David Haugh agreed.
"I think he's back next year," Haugh said.
