Report: Willson Contreras, Cubs avoid arbitration with 1-year, $9.625-million deal

(670 The Score) Catcher Willson Contreras and the Cubs avoided arbitration by agreeing on a one-year, $9.625-million deal for the 2022 season, ESPN reported Thursday morning.

The sides had been headed for an arbitration hearing later Thursday prior to reaching the deal. The $9.625-million figure marked the halfway point between the $9 million the Cubs had submitted as a salary number and the $10.25 million that Contreras and his camp had submitted.

Contreras, 30, is set to become a free agent after this season, and his future has been a hot topic for a struggling Cubs team. The has been little to no progress in extension talks in recent months, making Contreras a prime candidate to be traded later this summer before the deadline.

Contreras is having an excellent season, hitting .277 with 10 homers, 23 RBIs and a .933 OPS in 47 games.
