The Nationals are receiving first baseman and designated hitter Luke Voit from the Padres to complete the trade for Juan Soto and Josh Bell, a deal that was rendered incomplete after Eric Hosmer rejected a trade to the Nats.
Grant Paulsen and Bob Nightengale both reported the news.
Voit, a 31-year-old right-handed hitter who's currently making $5.45 million, still has two full arbitration years remaining and is under contract through the 2024 season. He's averaging .225 at the plate with a .733 OPS, with 13 homers and 48 RBI for the Padres this season.
Voit had previous stints with the Yankees and Cardinals and is a .258 lifetime hitter (.838 OPS) with 86 career home runs. He was traded to San Diego by the New York Yankees in March of this year.
Earlier Tuesday, the Nats appeared set to acquire 32-year-old first baseman Eric Hosmer as part of their deal with the Padres, until a maelstrom of reports indicated Hosmer had rejected the deal, with Washington on his no-trade list. Hosmer wound up being traded to the Boston Red Sox.
Washington also acquired 19-year-old outfielder James Wood, 23-year-old left-handed pitcher MacKenzie Gore, 20-year-old outfielder Robert Hassell III, 21-year-old shortstop C.J. Abrams, and 18-year-old right-handed pitcher Jarlin Susana in the deal.
The Nationals may not be done just yet. MLB's trade deadline is Tuesday at 6 p.m. ET.
