A blockbuster trade between the Nationals and Padres that will send Juan Soto and Josh Bell to San Diego has been agreed to in principle. The only question that remains is whether or not 32-year-old first baseman Eric Hosmer will be included in it.
According to Ken Rosenthal and others, the 32-year-old first baseman has a clause in his contract stipulating that Washington is on his no-trade list. Rosenthal isn't suggesting it's a deal-breaker, but rather that Hosmer — who's under contract through 2025 — may "get something more" out of the deal.
The trade will not be official until Hosmer agrees to waive that no-trade clause, per Rosenthal.
Grant Paulsen of 106.7 The Fan has confirmed the rest of the trade package will remain, regardless of what happens with Hosmer, and that Soto and Bell will both be going to San Diego.
If you're having trouble keeping track of this one, you're most certainly not alone. Updates have been a million miles per second and changing by the minute. We've done our best to sort through them all and present them as coherently as possible.
Got all that? Now add this wrinkle.
Outside of Hosmer, Washington is getting back: 19-year-old outfielder James Wood; 23-year-old left-handed pitcher MacKenzie Gore; 20-year-old outfielder Robert Hassell III; 21-year-old shortstop C.J. Abrams; and 18-year-old right-handed pitcher Jarlin Susana.
