The Washington Nationals had one final piece to sell off before packing it in on a night full of trade activity Thursday.
After dealing Max Scherzer and Trea Turner to the Dodgers, Kyle Schwarber to the Red Sox and Brad Hand to the Blue Jays, the Nationals traded right-handed reliever Daniel Hudson to the San Diego Padres in exchange for 23-year-old right-handed pitcher Mason Thompson and 21-year-old infielder Jordy Barley.
Thompson, a third-round selection in 2016, made his Major League debut for the Padres in June, pitching to a 3.00 ERA while allowing one earned run on four hits with two strikeouts and a walk in four relief appearances (3 IP).
The massive 6-foot-7, 223-pound framed Thompson was the No. 9 prospect in San Diego's system. He went 3-2 with a 5.74 ERA in 23 appearances (26.2 IP) for Triple-A El Paso in 2021, recording 24 strikeouts and allowing eight walks.
Barley hit .240 with eight doubles, two triples, eight homers and 28 RBI for Low-A Lake Elsinore in 2021. He also led San Diego's minor league system with 33 stolen bases. He's hit .236 with 39 doubles, 16 triples, 24 homers, 106 RBI and 66 stolen bases in 230 games across four minor league seasons.
Barley first signed with the Padres as an international free agent (Dominican Republic) in July 2016.
Hudson, 34, went 4-1 with a 2.20 ERA in 31 appearances for the Nationals in 2021. Originally acquired at the deadline in July 2019, Hudson went 10-3 with 16 saves and a 2.99 ERA in three seasons for the Nationals, recording 99 strikeouts against just 22 walks in 78.1 innings pitched (76 appearances).
Hudson recorded the final out of the 2019 World Series.
