The Nationals got one beacon of light on the final day of a tough season, which was looking like it would end in a second straight blowout loss to the Mets: Israel Pineda’s first major-league hit.
The 22-year-old catcher had spent seven years in the minors before the Nats called him up from Triple-A in September, and he had been 0-for-11 with a walk before the fifth inning of Game 162, when he ripped Trevor Williams’ first pitch into left field for his first big-league knock:
Pineda is the No. 26 prospect in the organization according to MLB.com, and he had hit .258 across three levels in the minors this season.
