Ben Standig on Commanders who could have a breakout year with Scott Jackson

The Washington Commanders are entering training camp with a quarterback battle looming – but seems to be largely settled with Sam Howell the winner – but who are the potential candidates for a breakout season?

Ben Standing, Commanders reporter for The Athletic, joined Scott Jackson (in for Kevin Sheehan) to name a few candidates and one of them was tight end Cole Turner: "He looks the part, and if he turns into it, he doesn't have to be Kellen Winslow [Sr.], if he's getting 35, 40 catches as a red zone through, that's an element none of us are even contemplating right now and that's what makes him so interesting in terms of the x-factors..."

And of the other young players who could breakout, Standig mentions Dyami Brown: "He's got the speed, and the one game last year where they threw him the ball he had huge numbers. This is probably more of a [Eric] Bieniemy thing than a Dyami thing, but will they maximize the full roster of playmakers than just say, 'Hey, we're gonna get Terry McLaurin the ball over and over again.' Which is good, but are they gonna do more? And I think Dyami is the kinda guy that could become that random deep threat at least that burns the defense more than you might think."

On the defensive side of the ball Darrick Forrest, who presumably enters this season as the starter, as a player who has good physicality and had a hand in the Commanders' best stretch of football when he seemed to be around the football on turnovers a lot, Standig added.

"A little more consistency, he's got a little more experience, I think he could go up another notch, as well," he said.

After talking on the field things, Jackson and Standig got into talking about the ownership change with the impending league vote coming around July 20 and what they will do with the change or lack of immediate changes (don't expect a surprise trade for a quarterback) that are coming this summer.

That would mean Harris and the new group will likely have people enter Ashburn to be their new eyes and ears, but Jackson and Standig both said a surprise announcement about changing the name isn't on the horizon and Jackson had an interesting theory with a hint that Harris could keep Commanders.
