The Junkies were confused by the Commanders’ decision to address the secondary with each of their first two draft picks, and they weren’t alone.
Pete Hailey of NBC Sports Washington joined The Junks on Monday and agreed that taking Emmanuel Forbes and Jartavius Martin in the first and second round was a head-scratcher, to say the least.
“It didn’t make any sense,” Hailey said. “I was totally floored by it. I liked Forbes and I liked Martin, but those two together makes it a bit strange and a little hard to understand.”
Hailey, like The Junkies, figured Washington would put a premium on bolstering the offensive line, and even though most of the premium linemen were taken before the Commanders were on the clock, responding by putting full focus on the secondary was a puzzling audible.
“In the first round, there was a big run on tackles, and there wasn’t a lot of other positions this team was interested in, so they take Emmanuel Forbes,” Hailey said. “Cool, this guy intercepts a ton of passes, and a lot of them end with him standing in the end zone for six points.
“But from there, Martin, I like the idea of having a stacked secondary, but you have Kam Curl going into his fourth year, Derrick Forrest and [Benjamin] St-Juste going into their third years. Now you have a couple rookies. There’s a lot of young talent here…but I can see us getting into October of this year and maybe the defense is playing really well, but there are leaks on the offensive line, maybe there’s an issue at receiver, and we’re looking a this draft like, ‘It would have been nice to select this receiver.’”
