Last week, the Washington Commanders conducted an interview with offensive coordiantor Eric Bieniemy for the team's vacant head coaching position.
This came as a mild surprise to some people but was not a surprise to Craig Hoffman because "it makes sense" that they spoke to somebody in-house who is respected around the league and had been a candidate for numerous head coaching jobs around the league during previous cycles.
"I also have no interest in hiring him," Hoffman said on his eponymous show. "And that's where I just get straight to the point. Eric Bieniemy is a good coach who just had a horrendous year. And I just don't know how there's any other version of what happened in 2023 with the Commanders' offense.
"There is no justifying the game plan that they went into [the season with]. There's no possible way you could say passing the ball with the frequency they did, leveraging Sam Howell a second-year starter who had 19 career passes coming into the season was a good idea."
Hoffman said that we have to think back to why Bieniemy came to Washington: to prove he could succeed outside of working with Andy Reid in Kansas City. And "no matter how you cut it," based on last season's evidence the answer is no.
And for Hoffman, there are better options still out there than the guy who has only had success with Reid and Patrick Mahomes and was the source of a lot of friction inside the building.
"Bieniemy's always kinda had this 'he's really good, but he's gonna agitate ya," Hoffman said. "Do you want the guy that's the agitator running the organization?"
