So much has been made about Chase Young missing the Commanders’ voluntary OTAs, but on Friday, after we’ve officially missed Chase for two weeks now, and EB had a theory about what’s going on.
Maybe, for him specifically, part of it is just that Young is a DeMatha Catholic guy like EB and Bish, so he wants more from his brother in alma mater.
“I’ll be honest, I like to troll Chase, and sometimes, I feel like I’m justified. I want him to do great, and maybe that’s why I’m lashing out,” EB said. “Maybe that’s why I’m disappointed – I’m hurt he hasn’t been great. And, you have the obligatory HTTC guys who will blindly say it’s voluntary OTAs and it doesn’t matter, but I do think he’s been an utter disappointment and borderline bust; he may play 10 years in the league but won’t live up to being No. 2 in the Draft.”
“You love the Commanders more than any other team, but you did the same bit with Jamin Davis,” JP replied. “If a guy is drafted high and is disappointing, you’re out on him early.”
EB admitted it happened with Bradley Beal, too, and was wrong, so maybe Young can turn it around – but here’s his theory on Young missing OTAs, and it’s a different thought on his lack of contract:
“So, I’m getting all this hate, and I was thinking about it: we know he’s disgruntled he didn’t get the fifth-year option, but maybe he’s not holding out because he’s mad, or thinks he’s better than the team,” EB said. “What if it’s that Young and Montez Sweat, who have the same agent, are simply being advised that they don’t have contract for next year, so stay away to look out for your business? Like, don’t go tear your ACL in a voluntary workout and ruin your contract year.”
An interesting path, and one EB would understand, especially for Young coming off two years sabotaged by a knee injury.
“You have to look out for your business, and that doesn’t mean they think they’re better than the team. I’m giving the benefit of the doubt that it could simply be a prudent business decision,” EB said. “Maybe the agent is advising not to go out there and get hurt again. Maybe that’s why there’s not more pushback from the team?”
As Cakes pointed out, injuries can happen in private workouts just as easily as at OTAs, and EB’s counter was “get yourself an insurance policy and get your ass over there.”
Maybe the same goes for Charles Leno Jr., who does have a contract for 2024 but not an iron-clad one?
“Leno’s contract is a three-year deal, but he’s pretty much a goner if he doesn’t play outstanding, because it would be not much in dead cap to cut him,” EB said. “So, he may be in the same boat, and they’re missing this on purpose.”
Listen above to all of EB’s thoughts, as well as what his fellow Junks think of the theories!
