Kevin Sheehan wonders if Commanders rookie QB Jayden Daniels is bust-proof

It was not much of a surprise from Dan Quinn on Monday when he officially named rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels the Washington Commanders' Week 1 starter, which is just 19 days away.

While Daniels will be the eighth new starting quarterback in the last eight years to open the season for Washington, Kevin Sheehan said it "does feel like a new day and I'm optimistic about Jayden Daniels being different and having the ability to be here for more than just the 2024 season opener."

Now, does that mean Sheehan is on board with what Eric Bickel of The Sports Junkies said on 106.7 The Fan, that "my guy is not going to miss" and Daniels has proved during his first two preseason games he is not going to be a bust.

So, does Sheehan belief Daniels is "bust-proof?"

Now, in holding his hand up for accountability, Sheehan does admit that Josh Doctson and Chase Young were two players that he was really high on coming out of the draft and neither of them lived up to their first-round billing. And, of course, he had "no issue with the trade with the Rams or the pick" of Robert Griffin III. (That last one at least had one year of incredible results.)

But Sheehan's answer: "If I were really [being honest] I would vote no, it is way too early. It's way too early. Of course, there is the chance Jayden could bust and I'm the biggest fan there is of him, I think right now, and have been all year. And I've wanted all along for them to be in a position to take him. And I don't think he will. I certainly don't think he'll bust.

"Everything about what made him a great college quarterback last year – one of the great college quarterback seasons we've seen – it all translates to today's NFL. One of the reasons I'm fired up and optimistic, that I'm a huge fan, I think they did the right thing and I'm very, very bullish on Jayden Daniels being one of those guys that turns out to be right."

But, after just a handful of throws in two preseason games, Sheehan can't tell for sure if Daniels will be one of the players who hits out of the six quarterbacks taken in the first 12 picks of the 2024 NFL Draft.

"I'm convinced and optimistic not because of what I saw him do in the preseason," Sheehan continued. "I mean there are impressive things about him in the two preseason games, no dobut. His poise, he clearly looks like he belongs and that he feels very comfortable out there. But that's not why I think Jayden Daniels is gonna be a good quarterback for Washington. That's not why I'm really optimistic and thrilled. It's because of what he did in college, in real games, last year."
