My Thursdays with Grandma George have been so much fun, and getting to learn her favorite recipes from her is just icing on the cake. This past week, we made her mom's Apple Slices Strudel. When I first looked at the recipe, I was intimidated, but as she walked me through it really was not that hard. Hopefully, you will enjoy it as much as we do!
Ingredients
2 1/2 cups of flour
1 tbsp sugar
1 tsp salt
1 cup shortening
1 egg separated
1/3 cup milk
2/3 cup crushed corn flakes
5 cups sliced apples
1/2-3/4 cup sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
Instructions
For the crust, mix the first four ingredients, and then take the egg yolk and the 1/3 cup of milk and mix. Add to the mixture and then mix in. Split the dough in half a roll out thin. It needs to fit on most of a 15x7 baking sheet. The second half of the dough will be used for the top.
Mix the apples, crushed corn flakes, and cinnamon, and place the mixture on top of the dough on the cookie sheet. Cover with the other half of the dough, pinching the sides together. (I folded up the bottom dough over the top and pinched) Beat the egg whites til frothy and put on top. Bake in a 400-degree oven for 40 minutes. Pull it out and while hot, drizzle frosting/glaze over the top. (1 cup powdered sugar, to 3 tablespoons milk)
