Dr. Greg Hobelmann, Co-CEO, Ashley Addiction Treatment with Gina Crash

Greg Carpenter

Last week on Spotlight On Maryland during National Recovering Month, Gina Crash was joined in studio by Dr. Greg Hobelmann, Co-CEO of Ashley Addiction Treatment to talk about their mission, his clinical background, leadership role and lived recovery experience. Ashley's mission is to transform and save lives by integrating the science of medicine, the art of therapy and the compassion of spirituality.

National overdose deaths are declining, but overdose deaths are only one measure. Dr. Hobelmann discussed changes such as co-occurring mental health conditions, chronic pain, polysubstance use and greater isolation. He also talked about the misconception that "natural," legal substances like marijuana and kratom automatically means they are harmless. He also discussed the role of communication in recovery, peer and family support, and the value of being around people who understand the experience.

Dr. Hobelmann also talked about some of the biggest misconceptions people still have about addiction and recovery like relapse equals failure or recovery looking the same for everyone and needing to "hit rock bottom."
