This week on Spotlight On Maryland, Gina Crash was joined in studio by Abby Markoe, the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Baltimore SquashWise to talk about their mission, programs and how they are transforming dowtown Baltimore's historic Greyhound Bus Terminal into their permanent home anticipated to open in mid-2025. The 6-court, 3-classroom facility will also serve as a community squash center. Abby shared information about how people can help support the project by becoming Founding Members.
Founded in 2007, SquashWise partners with Baltimore's youth and families to advance equity in squash, education and personal development opportunities. They are a dedicated agent of change providing a place where students reach their academic, athletic and life goals and where the squash community becomes more accessible and welcoming for all. SquashWise weathered the closure of their long-time facility partner Meadow Mill Athletic Club, and the establishment of a temporary facility and are excited about transforming their new home located at 601 N. Howard Street in Baltimore.
SquashWise accomplishes their mission through their programs like Youth Development, Summer Camp that is in full swing now, School Squash Programs and Community Squash programs that are changing the game for youth and adults in Baltimore City. Students typically join SquashWise in middle school and they continue to support them through high school graduation into postsecondary placements, (college, career training, military or the workforce). Abby shared many success stories about their students during the interview including Keon Rosado who we interviewed back in 2018. Keon graduated from Morehouse College and is about to start a PhD in History at the University of Delaware.
