This week on Spotlight On Maryland, Gina Crash spoke with Beats Not Bullets, (BNB), Program Coordinators MC Bravado and Brandon Lackey about their Baltimore based music program that is a flagship initiative of the Dream Bigger Community Institute, (DBCI), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization providing extracurricular and enrichment programming for at-risk youth in Baltimore.
Beats Not Bullets aims to increase middle and high school aged students' knowledge of sound engineering and the recording industry. To date, over 500+ youth aged 12-20, have enjoyed the concept and graduates have produced musical projects, secured production placements and obtained internships with local recording studios.
BNB Program Coordinator and rapper MC Bravado is a former Baltimore City High School English teacher who utilizes his background in Education and his platform as a nationally touring artist to help BNB reach new heights.
Brandon Lackey was a special educator in Baltimore City Public Schools for three years prior to opening Lineup Recording Studios and serving as a Program Coordinator for Beats Not Bullets.
Brandon and MC Bravado shared how their Hip Hop Education program led them to SXSW EDU this year! There is currently no waiting list for the program that can be brought to schools where kids can sign up or parents and students can reach out via Beats Not Bullets' Instagram page or by emailing info@dreambigger.org.
