This week on Spotlight On Maryland, Gina Crash was joined in studio by George Kilbourne, Advisory Board Member, the National Kidney Foundation serving Maryland and Delaware, (NKFMDDE), and Troy Tillery, NKFMDDE Kidney Transplant Donor & Ambassador, to talk about the upcoming Maryland Kidney Walk on Sunday, September 10th at UMBC.
George talked about Chronic Kidney Disease, (CKD), including the most common warning signs, how many people are currently impacted by CKD, who is most likely to be impacted by it, and how people with CKD are managing their chronic illness. George also talked about NKFMDDE's mission, vision and what support and programs they offer locally. NKFMDDE supports medical research, conducts public education, provides free health screenings and provides emergency financial assistance to low-income dialysis and transplant patients to help with daily needs like transportation, electricity, groceries and medical equipment.
Troy shared his story about what made him decide to become a Living Donor. Sixteen years ago, Troy donated his kidney to his sister Erika who had a rare kidney disease. Today they are both healthy and together they lead "Team Gucci" every year at the Maryland Kidney Walk. This year "Team Gucci" is also hosting their first "Beats N Bingo" music fundraiser on October 5th at 7pm in Woodlawn, Maryland.
The Maryland Kidney Walk is Sunday, September 10th at UMBC at 10am. For online registration, visit kidneywalk.org/maryland. For information about NKFMDDE, visit kidneymd.org. You can also follow them on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn.
