This week on Spotlight On Maryland, Gina Crash was joined in studio by Bethany Spriggs, President of the Reisterstown Recreation Council & Girls Lacrosse & Field Hockey Commissioner, and John Kneisly, Reisterstown Festival Chairman, to talk about the Reisterstown Rec Council's programs and their 38th Annual Reisterstown Festival this weekend September 6th and 7th at Hannah More Park in Reisterstown featuring a "Take a Break Tent" for neurodivergent children and their families.
The Reisterstown Festival is one of many all-volunteer programs of the Reisterstown Recreation Council, (RRC). The RRC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization which, in coordination with the Baltimore County Department of Recreation and Parks, offers a wide range of recreation and entertainment in the area like youth and adult sports leagues, day camps and community events. RRC programs enrich the lives of area residents offering exercise, promoting competition and teamwork.
As RRC President and Girls Lacrosse and Field Hockey Commissioner Bethany Spriggs also talked about one of the reasons they started the program: to create a feeder program for their local high school-Franklin High School, that faces challenges in fielding full varsity teams and does not have JV teams in several sports. RRC is working to change that. Their goal is to strengthen our schools and community by building a lasting network through youth sports.
John Kneisly, Chairman of the Reisterstown Festival, talked about the festival highlights that include a parade down Main Street Reisterstown on Saturday morning, live bands both days, over 100 vendors, a fireworks display and the National Anthem performed by one of their bands-MIGGS, whose singer is currently active military. He also talked about the Festival's "Take A Break Tent" specially designed for neurodivergent children and their parents and families like John's and inspired by his youngest son who was diagnosed with Stage Two Autism in 2022.
