This week on Spotlight On Maryland, Gina Crash was joined in studio by Terry Hasseltine who is the Executive Director of the Maryland Sports Commission and the President of the Sport & Entertainment Corporation of Maryland. In order to first understand what the Sport & Entertainment Corporation of Maryland is, we must first learn about the Maryland Sports Commission and all that they do. The goal of the Maryland Sports Commission is to enhance Maryland's economy, image and quality of life by attracting, promoting, retaining and developing regional, national and international sporting events.
The Sport & Entertainment Corporation was developed to support Maryland's Sports Commission in hosting world-class events, like the 4th Annual Maryland 5 Star at Fair Hill returning to Cecil County in October, and the Maryland Cycling Classic, (postponed this year due to the Key Bridge collapse and the Summer Olympics), as well as Baltimore's 2026 FIFA World Cup Host Candidacy. Although Baltimore didn't secure the bid, Sport Corp has developed legacy events that are being facilitated internationally like "Football for Peace." Baltimore is now the first "City of Peace" through that global initiative.
The Sport and Entertainment Corporation of Maryland is a 501(c)3 established in 2019 to further and promote exclusively, charitable, religious, educational and scientific purposes and the business and objects to be carried on and promoted by it include: to support Maryland Sports in hosting major sports events, economic analysis and research relating to sports, sponsorship of major sports events, to recruit, retain, market, promote and manage sports events that have positive media exposure, economic impact and image impact within the State of Maryland, and which will enhance the quality of life of citizens of the State of Maryland. They also solicit and receive contributions from businesses, government entities, nonprofit entities and individuals interested in the promotion of sports in the State of Maryland.
