After multiple drownings at one Upstate lake, the South Carolina DNR is reminding people to be safe and vigilant on the water. Five people have drowned in Lake Hartwell this summer, the latest was 17 year old Westside High Senior Abraham Vazquez.
He drowned near the River Forks Boat Ramp, earlier this week. He was swimming from one shoreline to another when he became exhausted and went under the water.
SCDNR Officials says that the lake's water level is low which causes more danger for swimmers. As of Thursday officials said Hartwell is about 8 and a half feet below full
. Lifejackets are available at most boat ramps statewide. The DNR asks that they are returned after being used.
