The warning period is winding down for South Carolina’s new Hands-Free law....

The South Carolina Legislature enacted the Hands-Free and Distracted Driving Act on September 1st of last year. The law requires drivers to put down their phones and other electronic devices while driving and keep their focus on the road.

Right now, drivers are currently in a 180-day grace period, which ends next month. Beginning February 28th, citations will be issued to violators.

Penalties include a $100 fine for a first offense. Second and subsequent offenses, within three years, carry a $200 fine and two points on the driver’s record.

There are some exceptions to the Hands-Free law. To read more on that, CLICK HERE to be directed to the SC Department of Public Safety's website.
