Spartanburg County Council is closing the door on new data center development for one year, but the moratorium approved Monday night, doesn't lock it. The moratorium approved on a five to one vote, followed the adoption of of four amendments.
Councilmember Jessica Coker was the only opposition on the vote. One amendment specifies that new data center applications will be put on hold, not rejected. Another amendment could allow for some projects to proceed. They have to be built in an established industrial park, or a former factory, such as the Northmark's Valara center which is under construction, on South Pine Street.
And no data center will be allowed to within less than a mile from another one. The Valera project managers informed officials the center's require up to one and a half million gallons of water per day,, which is more than double the amount on their original application. The County water commissioner expressed concerns about that.
