(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A Waukegan man is fighting for his life after being hit by a distracted driver while riding a bicycle Sunday morning, officials said.

The Lake County Sheriff's Office said the 48-year-old bicyclist was hit by a Dodge SUV around 7 a.m on Fairfield Road near Route 176.

The driver, a 24-year-old woman, became distracted by young children in the SUV, investigators said. She reportedly turned her attention away from the road -- causing the vehicle to veer to the right and hit the bicyclist, who was on the right side of the southbound lanes.

The bicyclist was rushed to a hospital in critical condition with life-threatening injuries, police said.

At this time, no charges have been filed, and the crash remains under investigation.
