A medical team at Chicago’s Northwestern University has found the Brazilian variant of COVID-19 — the first time it’s been detected in Illinois.

Public health officials say that the person who was infected had not traveled outside the state of Illinois.

A number of questions arise with this discovery. If you’ve been vaccinated, or if you have had COVID-19 and have antibodies, how effective are those antibodies against the more easily transmitted Brazilian variant?

Dr. Ramon Lorenzo-Redondo said your immune system will likely have a less efficient response.

“Still there is a response, but it might be less potent.”

He said it all needs more study.

The key to stemming the spread of COVID-19 is to keep wearing masks and to get vaccinated when it’s your turn, Dr. Lorenzo-Redondo said.
