CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Businessman and mayoral candidate Willie Wilson is planning another gas and food giveaway a week from Saturday, on October 8.
Willie Wilson said he set aside $5.2 million for gas and grocery giveaways.
He said this is something he’s been doing for decades, not just when he’s running for office, as he has a handful of times.
“(The) last 35 to 40 years I’ve given away over $70-80 million, giving from the heart and having never ask for anything back,” Wilson said. “People like myself genuinely care. It’s about caring…You have to ask for votes to let people know you’re running…You have to let them know you’re running. We’ve been to all 77 communities and help all 77 communities in Chicago, like we always have done.”
Wilson was cleared by state election officials four years ago when he was accused of violating election law, essentially buying votes, by handing out $200,000 at a church.
“We decided to do gasoline and food because it was the right time. We owe Chicago because Chicago has been good to me,” said Wilson.
Wilson said he may spend more on giveaways when the $5.2 million is depleted.
He self-financed his campaign this time around with $6 million.
