CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Thursday is the last day to apply for a vote by mail ballot in the upcoming primary elections, but election officials warn that Chicagoans may need to vote in person to ensure their vote counts.
Just over 120,000 requests have been made by Chicagoans for mail- in ballots and only about 30,000 have been returned said Marisel Hernandez, Chairwoman of the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners.
To be counted, the ballots must be postmarked by June 28 so Hernandez is now urging voters to take their mail- in ballots to an early voting site.
"We do not recommend that you apply for a vote by mail ballot now. If you want to be sure that your ballot is counted, we urge you instead to visit one of our early voting sites instead and vote on the spot."
There are 51 such sites throughout the city. Hernandez advises the same for those that have requested, but not yet received a mail-in ballot.
