CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The Chicago Police Department is grappling with the loss of one of its own after Officer Luis Huesca was shot and killed early Sunday as he headed home after his shift.

Superintendent Larry Snelling said Officer Huesca was shot multiple times just before 3 a.m. yesterday in Gage Park, two days shy of his 31st birthday.

“That officer was a victim of the type of crime that he was working against to keep people safe in this city,” Snelling said.

He said Officer Huesca was wearing his uniform at the time. While the department has not confirmed it, FOP President John Catanzara said the officer was shot during a carjacking.

Catanzara called the officer’s death an “execution.”

“Law enforcement in this state and all across the country are under greater attack than ever before, but specifically in Illinois, when we have paroled at least three Chicago Police cop killers in the last two years,” Catanzara said.

In a statement, Mayor Brandon Johnson called the shooting “unconscionable” and said he met with Officer Huesca’s mother and uncle to offer them the city’s full support.

The department has not released many details about its investigation at this point.
