(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The city of Chicago is sitting on a supply of 343,000 tons of road salt as winter appears to be over.

The massive salt supply is spread at 19 locations across the city. Streets and Sanitation Commissioner Cole Stallard says his department has eight domes, plus other protected storage spots.

He said he's not ready to declare winter over, despite balmy temperatures in the 70s forecast for next week.

Chicago’s stockpile may sound like a lot, but officials say the city will actually add more to get up to 425,000 tons to start the next season.

Meantime, some salt trucks are being converted to help with asphalt work over the warm months.
