Chicagoans will see some snow tonight while ringing in 2024: National Weather Service

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) --New Year's revelers may see some snow as they celebrate Sunday.

The National Weather Service is predicting a period of freezing rain and sleet in the Chicago area that will change to ice accumulation of a light glaze on bridges, overpasses, and elevated surfaces. After a brief break, snow is expected by mid-afternoon Sunday and to continue into early Monday morning.

NWS said that significant travel impacts are not expected, but some bridges and overpasses may become slick.

The Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation is prepared and has deployed salt spreaders to focus on addressing ice and snow along Chicago’s arterial routes and Jean Baptiste Pointe DuSable Lake Shore Drive in an effort to ensure safety for drivers.

DSS said its staff will continue to monitor the weather and ground conditions and will adjust snow and ice resources if and when needed. Residents are encouraged to be mindful of icy conditions, and drive and walk with caution.
