(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A new report from Chicago’s Inspector General finds the city’s police force has made improvements to responding to large gatherings since 2020. However, the report also finds that more work must be done ahead of this summer’s Democratic National Convention.
Chicago's Office of Inspector General (OIG) has released a follow-up report on the police department's preparedness for mass gatherings.
Inspector General Deborah Witzburg says the new report contains both positives and negatives.
“I am heartened by, I think people should be heartened by, the fact that there are some real concrete measurable improvements over where we were in 2020,” Witzburg said.
“I also think that there are areas of continued concern.”
Witzburg said she’s encouraged by CPD’s response to the new report.
In its report published Thursday – as Chicago prepares to host the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in August – OIG examines whether CPD is better prepared for mass gatherings, across various areas of concern, than it was in 2020 during protests over the death of George Floyd.
