SKOKIE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Parents and students crowded an Evanston/Skokie School Di,strict 65 board meeting Monday demanding that the board reverse a decision to move students out of Bessie Rhodes School, which is slated for closure after the next school year.

Parents said it came out of the blue.

An email on Oct. 16 informed parents seventh and eighth grade students would move in mid-November because of a staff shortage.

“Your actions fracture communities, erode trust and create division,” one teacher said.

“Uprooting them now would be detrimental to their mental well-being, it isn’t just shortsighted, it just feels cruel,” a mother told the board.

Dr. Angel Turner is the District 65 superintendent. She offered an apology Monday night.
