(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A masonry worker was fatally injured Wednesday in an accident at Homewood-Flossmoor High School, officials said.

The construction worker was hurt while doing work on the science building in the school’s south wing, according to published reports.

The Medical Examiner's Office identified by the worker as 63-year old Ronald Simonson of Vernon Hills. He was taken to South Suburban Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

District 233 Superintendent Scott Wakeley extended his condolences in a message Thursday to families.

“The safety of our students, staff and those working on our campus is our top priority. The construction site is only accessible to construction crews and there is no danger to students or staff,” he said.

Counselors would be available for students or staff members, if necessary, he said.
