The Chicago Teachers Union makes preparations amid President Trump's threats to send federal troops to the city.
CTU members and other educators gathered on Wednesday to announce a plan to keep students and families safe as the city braces for the potential deployment of the National Guard and immigration officials.
"I have no idea if there will be tanks in the neighborhoods tomorrow. I have no idea if people are going to show up with rifles strapped to their back,” CTU President Stacey Davis Gates said. “That’s the thing about this right now. it’s terrible to lead because you have no idea. You would have never thought, because how in the hell is this happening?”
CTU members plan to give out “defend your rights” flyers at schools, stage walk-ins and organize teams to monitor around schools.
The teachers union is also calling on Chicago Public Schools to allow virtual learning for families keeping their kids at home for fear of being targeted.
