CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - North Side drivers on DuSable Lake Shore Drive (DLSD) will need to continue to be extra cautious the next few days, as a bumpy, rough stretch remains on a portion of the southbound side.

Although it’s not as treacherous as Thursday, the pavement on southbound DLSD from Irving Park Road to North Avenue remains ground down, with elevated manhole covers posing a serious hazard for drivers.

The rough surface will remain until at least early next week when crews resume the roadwork.

WBBM traffic reporter Beau Duran expects there to be added congestion because of these conditions and suggests drivers take alternatives such as Clark or Halsted streets when heading south.

This all became a serious issue Thursday morning when the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT)’s overnight work milling the southbound lanes exposed several potholes and manhole covers. The department said the conditions were discovered to be in poorer condition than anticipated.

Several dozen cars hit these potholes and sustained damage to their tires and suspensions. One pothole in particular near Belmont Avenue caused major problems.

Throughout Thursday, many of these potholes were filled throughout Thursday. CDOT even extended their scheduled overnight closure in order for pothole patching.

An update from CDOT is expected today.
