(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Drivers on southbound DuSable Lake Shore Drive on the North Side have been dealing with traffic and hazards all day Thursday. In the afternoon, a city spokesperson explained why so many cars were dealing with flat tires in a construction zone.
A Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) spokesperson said that crews milling the road surface to get ready for repaving found that it was in worse shape than they expected, and that exposed a lot of potholes.
A portion of southbound DuSable Lake Shore Drive from Irving Park Road to LaSalle Drive is currently in the process of being repaved, which has led to many overnight closures.
During the day on Thursday, many drivers faced traffic in those areas as some vehicles suffered flat tires.
CDOT says crews responded to this portion of the road for repairs Thursday morning. Additionally, closures Thursday night have been expanded north to Belmont Avenue to continue pothole patching.
Additionally, drivers whose vehicles suffered damage can file a vehicle damage claim with the Chicago City Clerk’s Office here: https://www.chicityclerk.com/about-mobile-city-hall/claims
Here’s the full statement from CDOT:
As part of CDOT’s ongoing resurfacing of North DuSable Lake Shore Drive, crews have been milling the southbound lanes this week between Irving Park Road and LaSalle Drive. The roadway base was found to be in poorer condition than anticipated, resulting in potholes on the milled surface.
Crews responded this morning to perform immediate repairs. Tonight, CDOT is expanding the scheduled overnight closure north to Belmont Avenue to accommodate more extensive pothole patching.
We remind drivers that the area is a milled surface and to drive with caution and observe the posted reduced speeds during construction.
