ELK GROVE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The Elk Grove Township Fire Department finished its last shift on Sunday.

Due to a lack of revenue and shrinking territory, The Elk Grove Township Fire Department, serving more than 5,000 residents, ceased operations as of 7:30 Sunday morning.

According to a letter obtained by the Daily Herald,  Chief Kieran Mackey told fire chiefs of Mount Prospect, Elk Grove and Des Plaines "too many things have happened in the last couple of months that have impacted drastically the source of revenue for the department.”

Emergency calls will be routed to three agencies, depending on the location of the calls.

The fire station held a closing ceremony Sunday, where firefighters boarded their rigs and a crowd of current and former firefighters and officials listened to the dispatch center decommission the department.
