CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A former agent with the Illinois Gaming Board has been found guilty of disorderly conduct - after being accused of making up two stories about how his government-owned vehicle was damaged on New Year’s Eve 2019.
The sentence is two years probation, payment of restitution and fines of $3,000 plus 60 hours community service for 50-year-old Christopher Peterson of Chicago.
The Illinois Attorney General’s office said Peterson filed a false police report in January of 2020 - saying initially that his state-issued car had been hit while it was parked near his home.
He also said that his wife took the car without his knowledge and had struck a median, finally admitting - when presented with evidence - that he hit the median on New Year’s Eve 2019 in Rosemont.
“Mr. Peterson violated his responsibility to serve the residents of Illinois with integrity when he misused his state-issued vehicle and then attempted to cover-up an accident,” Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul said in a statement.
“Taxpayers should not be left with the bill when individuals attempt to abuse their positions for personal benefit and to avoid accountability for wrongdoing.”
