CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Former political powerhouse Mike Madigan will go before a federal judge Wednesday on nearly two dozen corruption charges.
The 79-year-old former Illinois House speaker, who faces 22 counts, will be arraigned Wednesday afternoon on what federal prosecutors have labeled a criminal enterprise led by Madigan.
The U.S. Attorney’s office said the whole purpose of Madigan’s alleged enterprise was to boost his political power and bank account, and also make money for his political friends.
Madigan has denied any wrongdoing and said the government is attempting to criminalize a routine constituent service: job recommendations.
Federal prosecutors said some of those jobs involved people getting paid for doing little or no work.
