(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A trip to suburban McCook, Ill., should be a high priority for those who believe furniture design peaked in the ’40s, ’50s and ’60s. That’s because McCook is home to Modern Hill Furniture, which has dedicated 50,000 square feet to warehouses and showrooms filled with mid-century modern furnishings.
“Our furniture, you know, it’s already lasted 60 years,” said Mike Solan, who co-owns Modern Hill Furniture. “It’s already lasted the test of time and, with a little love and a little restoration, we get it ready for the next 60 years.”
Solan said Modern Hill carries cool, mid-century modern furniture for every room in the house — all original and restored, if needed.
“People are really attracted to the aesthetic: really modern, really clean lines and then, on top of that, it’s some of the best quality furniture you can get,” he said.
Solan’s partner Barry Louks started Modern Hill, oddly enough, while trying to furnish a new house he and his wife bought.
“My wife and I bought a house in 2014,” Louks said. “Her name is Hillary, so she’s kind of the ‘Hill’ in Modern Hill. She started decorating the home, buying things online, Craigslist.”
Before you know it, the collection of furniture grew through today, when the company boasts a stock totaling more than 2,500 pieces of mid-century furniture. Solan said people buy from them and sell to them at midcenturywarehouse.com.
“They go, ‘Hey, I see you guys got a large collection of this; I have some of it I’d like to sell,’ and they send us some photos, which they can do right on our website — and we’ll pick it up from them anywhere in the country,” Solan said.
