CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — An iconic North Side comedy spot won't be closing permanently, after all.

More than a year after it was announced the iO Theater was closing because of the financial strain of the pandemic, owner Charna Halpern says she's sold the building and the brand to two real-estate developers.

She said Tuesday they have promised to bring the improv classes, staff and shows back.

Halpren said the decision was bittersweet. She would have celebrated 40 years this year. The pandemic, ongoing bills and major repairs to the roof were the factors that made that impossible, she said.

Halpern said she hopes to play a role at the company she founded but adds that is up to the new owners.

"There's all kinds of new chapters for me right now," she said.

A grand reopening date has not been set.
