DOWNERS GROVE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Associated Press announced Sean Casten has won the Democratic primary race to represent Illinois’ 6th Congressional District.

With 52 percent of the vote counted, Casten, of Downers Grove, was leading fellow incumbent Rep. Marie Newman by more than 40 points.
Casten has served in the United States House of Representatives since 2019.
Just weeks before the election, Casten's campaign announced the passing of his 17-year-old daughter. On Tuesday night, Casten and his family stayed home and mourned.
After Casten announced the passing of his daughter, Newman’s campaign said they would immediately pull any negative ads against Casten from airing.

Newman, who was under investigation by the U.S. House Ethics Committee, which was looking into whether she had promised a job to a potential primary opponent back in 2018.
She was emotional when she gave her concession speech at her campaign headquarters in Countryside. Newman told the small group of volunteers and supporters that she spoke to Casten on the phone and congratulated him.
"I respect Sean for his proven commitment to the people of the district and I give him my full endorsement this evening," she said. "We all need to be together. We need to be united."
Casten will be facing off against Republican Keith Pekau, who is also the mayor of Orland Park, in the general election in November.
