(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Illinois is off to a record pace for tornadoes this year.

So far, meteorologists across the Land of Lincoln have confirmed 119 tornadoes, which is the most of any state, for now.

National Weather Service Meteorologist Scott Baker says it's not unusual for Illinois to be in the top 10 each year. But having more than 100 at this point in the year is rare, he said. It's happened only twice before this century.

The last time was 2006, Baker said, when Illinois had notched 144 tornadoes. In 2003, Illinois had experienced 136 tornadoes by this time of the year.

This year, March 31 is one day that stood out: Thirty-seven twisters swept through the state.

Behind Illinois this year is Alabama, with 91 tornadoes so far; Texas, with 78; Nebraska, with 67; and Iowa, with 64.

Twisters can hit as late as November and December.
