CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — After a half-century of serving the people of Island Lake, family-run grocery store Island Foods announced on Facebook that it will be closing its doors for good.

Some of the more than 400 comments on its Facebook post are about how people will miss the Italian specialties or the deli department at Island Foods.

One customer called Island Foods “a place of family,” where you would see the friendly faces of staffers and catch up with friends and neighbors in the produce aisle.

For many others, it was their first job. One person wrote Fred Sr. helped her get into nursing school.

Dawn Cruickshank said it will hold a special place in her heart — she met her husband while working at Island Foods 32 years ago.

Owners Michele Crisci and Denise Turner said 50 years after their father Fred Martucci — along with his three brothers — opened the grocery store, Island Foods and the surrounding property are being sold.

The store is expected to close its doors at the end of next month.
