JOLIET, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Joliet City Council has given its approval for an expansion of the amount of land to be developed into a warehouse logistics project referred to as NorthPoint.
There was plenty of opposition in the public comments portion of the Joliet City Council meeting, but in the end, the council approved the Compass Global Logistics Hub’s expansion to 2,300 acres or more than 3.5 square miles. That’s 1,000 acres more than the council approved a year ago.
Residents of Joliet, Manhattan and Elwood say the project will inundate them with truck traffic, pollution and noise.
"Jobs are important and more income for the city is important but the environmental crisis trumps everything so I am here to beg you to vote no", said Dave Caspar.
Stevie Guzman-Olivio, another resident, also opposed the project.
"The project would put more diesel trucks on the road and create worse air quality for Joliet and Will County residents, releasing particles in the air that would lead to worse outcomes for me and my community," he said.
Despite much objection, the council approved the development by a 6-to-2 vote.
