(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — On the Far South Side, Juneteenth events celebrating Black freedom are already underway.

A large vacant lot at 115th and Halsted streets in the Morgan Park neighborhood was transformed into a carnival style neighborhood celebration of Juneteenth. The event had train and horse back rides, bouncy houses, video game trailers, food vendors,  and booths operated by Black entrepreneurs.

There are also resources to include on-site dental exams and basic services.

Juneteenth, also known as Black Independence Day, takes place June 19, the day in 1865 when the last enslaved population in Galveston, Texas learned of their freedom.

“This is when Black people became free for real, not the Fourth of July,” said Yolanda Harrington.

Harrington was at the celebration of freedom with her sister LaDonna Williams.

“Just the fellowship of having fun being with your families, listening to historical music – be it gospel music, reggae house music – and just having a good time with the family,” Williams said.

“Freedom comes from right here. I don't care if you're in captivity. Freedom is in the mind to remain free mentally, emotionally and financially,” said Geraldine Hill Tolbert.

Tolbert said that to her, Juneteenth is a celebration of mental and financial freedom.

“You can be free mentally and financially, you alright.”

With no wrong or right way to celebrate Juneteenth, the key word is “Freedom” at an early celebration in Morgan Park.
