LAKE COUNTY (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A crime fighting canine in Lake County left behind an impressive legacy, but authorities believe his replacement is destined for great things.

Apparently, it runs in the family.

“It’s a direct connection with it being his son,” said Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy John Forlenza.

You’re likely familiar with Dax, the German Shepherd who spent years catching criminals, locating missing people, firearms and more for the Lake County Sheriff’s Office before his death last spring.

Forlenza was the pup’s partner.

“Working together for so long, you kind of read each others' minds in a sense, where he understood me, and I understood him really well. That led to a lot of success out on the road, fortunately,” Forlenza added.

Forlenza now hopes to recreate that success with K-9 Lux, a direct offspring of Dax.

After a few months of training, the two will take to the streets in the summer.

Forlenza said Dax was an easy choice to follow in his dad’s foot or paw steps.

“That’s our goal to further what we did with Dax and continue on. That’s kind of a tribute to him and his legacy,” said Forlenza.
